BUILDING PERMITS
. ANNUAL RETURNS SHOW DECREASE . According to figures supplied by the city engineer (Mr E. Somers), the number •of building permits issued by the Christchurch City Council during last month was more than double the total number issued for March, 1942, while the value of the jobs authorised showed a- similar increase. Figures for March, 1643, with comparative figures for March, 1642, in parenthesis, are as follows:—Number of permits issued, 70 (30): value of work, £11,673 (£4887); im collected, £76 19s (£B3). Roth In March, 1942, and last month, the largest contributor to the total figures was the St. Albans ward of the city; In March, 1942, work valued at £2387 was authorised in thil area, and last month Jobs were valued at £4288. Last month, work valued at £3039 was authorised in the Woolston ward. During the year ended March 31. 1943, 981 building permits were issued by the council, representing work valued at £179,967. In the previous year, 911 permits were issued, the value of the work, being estimated at £339,566. Fees collected amounted to £865, compared with £IBO4 10s in the previous year. Detailed figures of permits issued and the value of the work authorised during 1942-43, with comparative figures for 1941-42 in parenthesis, are as follows:—New Brighton ward, 32, £1995 (03, £10,766); Central, inner area, 55, £18,144 (48, £18,730); Central, outer area, 58, £47,084 (87, £39,842); St. Albans, 136, £34,016 (263, £115,862); Sydenham, 91, £19,818 (123, £29,343); Linwood, 82, £12,471 (135, £43,755); Spreydon, 67, £19,010 (131, £59,128); and Woolston, 30. £29,467 (61, £22,131).
