ELLESMERE COUNTY COUNCIL
FINANCES REVIEWED Reviewing at length the finances for the year ending March 31, at the monthly meeting of the Ellesmere County Council, the clerk reported a credit of £4OOO. Rate payments had been very satisfactory and the council would be in a good position to resume its normal scope of activities when the war ended. Commenting on the statement, the chairman (Cr. A, Anderson) said that although the position was sound, most of the credit balance would he required to pay for dragline equipment now on order, and required : to deal with drainage. Much difficulty in maintaining a supply of water to the county water-race system -from th 6 Rakaia river headworks was reported by the engineer, who statejd that - modern 1 plant, was - caused.-by. William Johnston, after the reading of a letter from the Transport Department,;wtdch stated that a zoning committeftssas to be set up for the county. The -gening of tradesmen’s deliveries had, heesaid, been done. Crs. Anderson and Marshall and the engineer were nominated as the council’s representatives on the com* mittee.
The Christchurch City Council advised that only one other local body besides Ellesm.ere Council had disagreed with the proposal to renew, for a further three years, the agreement lor the collection and allocation of heavy traffic fees. The council was asked to reconsider its decision. It was decided to reply that the council still thought that the distribution of the fees should be on a more modern basis and again registered its objection to the present method, which, it declared, operated unfairly to the county.
