CURRENT NOTES

The remarkably good sum of £525 was raised at a “community sing” and auction sale held in the Omihi Hall by returned servicemen of the WaiparaOmihi district, with the co-operation of the Waipara and Omihi sub-centres of the Red Cross Society. The money, a great amount of which was raised by direct appeal, is for the Red Cross candidate in the “Miss Victory" contest. Mr C. Phillips led the community singing and Mrs W. Trail and Mr P. Smith were the accompanists. The Rev. D. D. MacLachlan was the speaker at a meeting of the Sydenham branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. He discussed the necessity of educating young people in a healthy environment for spiritual, physical, and mental development. That girls should be registered from the age of 16 years, with the provision that under the age of 18 years should not be directed to work outside their piv n towns, was a recommendation made recently at the Taranaki provincial conference ‘of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary to the central executive (Wellington)., Members were of the opinion that if this recommendation were adopted many employers woujd be willing to release girls of 18 years and replace them with girls of 16 and 17 years of age. The Rev. C. Bell and Mrs Bell were bidden farewell by members of the Richmond Methodist Church recently. Speakers included Mr H. W. Beaumont, Mr A. G. Williams, and the Rev. J H. Allen, who spoke on behalf of the Circuit and the North Canterbury district. A presentation was made to the guests of honour by Mrs J. Bowden, president of the Ladies’ Guild. A musical programme was contributed by Misses Y. Johnson, S. Worrall, E. Gaisford, P. Beaumont, R. Beaumont, and Messrs L. Grace and C. Sharr. No dry. sunburned, rough skin tor you this summer.
