There was a good demand for preference shares on the Christchurch Stock Exchange yesterday, when buyers of Canterbury Frozen Meat (prel.) advanced their bids to £7 15s. Macduffs (pref.) to 21s 4d, R. and E. Tingey (pref.) to 2,s 6d, and New Zealand Farmers’ Co-op-erative (first pref.). to 83s 6d. In all cases sellers were reticent. The reported sale of Ballins Breweries at 14s 7d was an improvement on last business, while a large parcel of the 3 per cent. 1933-57 New Zealand Government Stock sold at £99 ss. MINING
Blackwater Mines; Ltd.—Returns for the tour weeks ended March 26 were: Crushed 3195 tons, yielding 1388 ounces of gold from all sources, the value of which, when gold is taken at 168s a fine ounce, was £11,659. Working expenses, not including ordinary or war duty, were £7632. Development expenditure was £528 and capital expenditure £404. Austral-New Zealand.—The dredge, in the 14 days ended April 3, produced 412 ounces in 237 hours.—(PA.) Slab Hut Creek.—The return for the week ending April 2 was 58 ounces from 13,460 yards, in 96 hours.
