SPORTING

TURF GOSSIP Mr Frank Mussen Reference was made at a meeting of the committee of the Southland Racing Club last week to the death of Mr Frank Mussen, former sporting editor of the "Southland Times," and one of the staunchest supporters of racing in Southland. It was agreed to elect Mrs Mussen a life member of the club. Dual Engagements Ten horses have been nominated for both the Great Easter and Autumn Handicaps this year. They are:—Theolateral, Daljarrock, Tutere, Little Secret, Night Pal, Prince Shad, Scottish Dale, Lowry Bay, Gayest Son, and Macedoine. This double has not been won by the same horse since Grand Knight scored in 1926. Feilding Cup Nominations as follows have been received for the Feilding Cup, of £6OO, one mile and a quarter:—Yogi, Sir Bradbury, Hogarth, Dynasty, Mahaina. Come True. Battledress, High Class, Flying Hawk, Full Hand, Broker’s Dream, Triple Crown, Irate, Foxssn. Te Kawiti, Hippodrome, Alexcelia, Blue Border, Moutoa Bond, Amigo. Tbeolateral, Airport, Classform, Glenfalloch. Stud Dispersal Because of ill-health, Mr A. F. M. Symes, of Richmond Park, Hastings, has decided to reduce his stud to a minimum, and it is his intention to send some 10 of his mares to the winter sale at Trentham in July. In the meantime, his young imported sire, Gynerium, by Phalaris from Figliastra, by Son-in-Law, has been leased to the Mardella Stud, Otahuhu, Auckland, for the next two seasons. Gynerium is having a very successful season, as he is the sire of the recent two-year-old winner at Trentham, Master Dash, while two more of his progeny in Walk Off and Note Raid were first and second in the Nursery Handicap at Hastings.

Rider Suspended Following the running of the Handicap Hurdles at the Bay of Plenty Racing Club’s annual meeting at Paeroa, an inquiry was held regarding interference by Venture with Runanga, Ginno, and Prince Pilot. J. Hayes, rider of Venture, was considered guilty of careless riding, and was suspended for two months,

Promising Colt Another promising galloper by Mr Standfast was produced at Paeroa. This was Atatu. who finished third in the Second Jack Tamer Memorial Handicap. Only for the fact that he came out very wide in the straight, finishing out almost along the lawn rail, Atatu would have been closer than lie was. It was a very encouraging effort, more especially as he was not as forward as many of the others. a”d more should be heard of him later. Atatu is an ucstanding black colt, and is trained at Matamata by A. McArthur for Mr F. Rose. His dam, Wahine Reihi, is by the Martian horse Raceful from Lady Floss, by Soult. This family came from Australia and was founded in New Zealand by the Black Eagle—Bessie mare Bianca. TROTTING NOTES A Good Guide As a form guide for the Auckland meeting on April 17 and the Easter meeting at Hawera, the form at the Hamilton fixture on Saturday should be of interest. The Farewell Handicap in which several Adam Memorial Cup candidates figured was a real test in which the Takanini pacer, Parshall, won. The favourite, Integrity, was very slow away and was badly placed until the top turn, where he had to go out wide. He made a gallant effort, but could not overhaul Parshall, who hung on well. Pacing Power, always in the first four, was also in the final fight, but Parrish Lad finished too solidly and cut him out of third money. Double Peter and Our Peggy, pacemakers for a mile, faded out, pnd Davey Day and Kenworthy were handy without being dangerous. The three place-getters will be hard to displace in the big event at Epsom. A Smart Mare With Josette out of the race, the finish of the Reid Memorial would have raised rare enthusiasm, but M. Stewart's mare, assisted by the slow pace set by Belfast Jack, spreadeagled the opposition at the finish. In a good tussle for the minor places. True Guide, Belfast Jack, and April Direct passed the judge in a blanket finish. This trio and Numba. who was scratched, should be useful at Hawera. Mighty Improves The former Canterbury pacer, Mighty, just shaded Hargood's Pride in the Thomas Handicap, and the latter should do better soon. • WELLINGTON T.C. ACCEPTANCES (P.A.)
