PAYMENT OF INCOME TAX
N.Z. SEAMEN IN WAR ZONE
A statement that New Zealand seamen who had served for two years on a ship in the war zone had to pay income tax on their return to the Dominion was made by Sergeant-Major A. L. Emerson at a meeting of the executive committee of the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association last evening. He said it was not fair that these men should pay on money which they had earned outside New Zealand while serving in the danger zone. Sergeant-Major Emerson added that men in uniform did not pay income tax or social security tax, and representations should be made to Dominion headquarters of the New Zealand Returned Services’ Association that the association did not consider it fair that these New Zealand seamen should have to pay income tax. The question was left in the secretary’s hands for further action.
