DAIRY COMPANY LICENCES
PROBATIONARY PERIOD OF TWO COMPANIES «MARKED IMPROVEMENT ” REPORTED Reference to the expiry of the six weeks’ probationary period given United Dairies, Ltd., and Albany Dairy, Ltd., was made at last evening’s meeting of the Christchurch City Counci bv Cr. G. D. Griffiths, who asked what the position was. The Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) said the matter would come before the next meeting of the milk committee of the council and before the council at its next meeting. The two companies were given six weeks in which to put their houses in order, and, if they had not done so in nine weeks, it would not make the position any better. However, he thought there had been a marked improvement. The council at a meeting on February 21 decided that the question of cancelling the licences to sell milk of these two companies be deferred for six weeks. This decision was made on the recommendation of the reserves committee, which had called on the companies to show reason why their licences should not bo cancelled and considered that there should be a probationary period. Cr. J. N. Clarke, chairman of the cc nmittee, said last evening that a special report on the companies had been prepared by the council’s inspectors for submission to the committee. Asked if any cognisance were taken of prosecutions of dairies generally, Cr. Clarke said a report on all these cases was made to the committee.
Cr. Denton agreed with the Mayor that there had been an improvement in the service given by the companies.
