VICE-REGAL
(P.A.) WELLINGTON. April 5. The Governor of Fiji (Sir Philip Mitchell) has arrived at Government House.
Mr I. J. Wilson, who recently returned from the Middle East, where he served as a captain in the 2nd N.Z.E.F., has been appointed secretary of the Canterbury Reclamation Board. Chaplain-Major John Hiddlestone, a prisoner of war in Stalag VIIIB, Germany, describes in letters to his wife how he was allowed to leave his camp and travel more than 400 miles by train, taking services with working parties. Formerly minister at the Epsom Baptist Church, Auckland, Major Hiddlestone went overseas with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force as senior Baptist chaplain, and remained behind with his men when they were captured in Crete.
Able Seaman S. Emerson, one of the members of the crew of the linef Awatea who have been mentioned in dispatches, comes from Christchurch. He is a son of Sergeant-Major A. L. Emerson, a well-known member of the New Zealand Permanent Staff in Christchurch, and a member of the executive of the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association. Able Seaman Emerson played football for the Merivai Club before joining the crew of the Awatea more than two years ago, and he was also well known as a boxer.
