More than 1000 volumes dealing with old New Zealand and the South Seas, part of the large collection of the late f\ev. A. B. Chappell. were sold by auction in Auckland recently. The top price of £5 was reached for "The Life of Henry William?," in two volumes, by H. Caiirlon. Bidding was keen for Samuel Butler's "A First Year in Canterbury Settlement, 1863." which was sold for £4. An illustrated copy of "Poenatno." bv Sir John Logan Campbell, changed hands at £2 Is. The first Auckland edition of Judge Mailing's •Old New Zealand." published in 1803, •was sold at £l. The lirst London edi■tion brought only lis. The most interesting sale of the day was that of a small handbook from Mr Dawson's collection. It was "Ko Te Rongo Pai." a Maori translation of the Gospels, printed by the Rev. William Coienso. at Paihia. in 1835. on the lirst printing press in New Zealand, which was established in the same year. It was sold at. £ 1 is.
