POTATOES
Sir, —The Minister in charge may congratulate himself on having a big surplus of potatoes; but before he takes a census of his expected chickens, he should prepare to look after them. The conditions at present are quite favourable to an outbreak of potato blight. Early potatoes from the Auckland province have arrived as usual, and any diseased ones among them have been thrown out, and have had a rare chance to develop their infection. Many more gardens have been planted in potatoes, and it is usually from the shelter of these small gardens that the disease first grows and spreads. This crop is now at a very susceptible stage of growth and the moist weather increases the threat. With an assured price, and with so much depending on this crop, it would be a good insurance to spray. Failing that, a tally of all the available power sprays should be taken,'and preparations made for their immediate use if required.—Yours, etc., i T.A.S. January 26, 1943.
