OBITUARY
MR A. E. BROWN One of the city’s pioneer electrical engineers, Mr Alfred Evelyn Brown, died suddenly yesterday afternoon after a short illness. Mr Brown was responsible for some of the earliest major electrical installations in Christchurch and in other centres in Canterbury and he was well known as one of the principals of Brown Brothers, electrical engineers. Fifty years ago, Mr Brown was apprenticed to Mr H. J. Cunnington, in Christchurch. In 1902 he installed one of the earliest direct-current circuits in the city to supply such old-estab-lished business houses as J. Ballantyne and Company, Ltd., E. Reece, Ltd., John Bates and Company, Ltd., and Mason, Struthers, Ltd. Later he was appointed electrical engineer to Scott Brothers and he was in charge of the complete electrical installations for the International Exhibition in North Hagley Park. Mr Brown supervised the first power supply for the Borough of Timaru. He entered partnership with his brother, Mr P. H. Brown, in 1908, and the firm has carried on business without interruption ever since.
