TROTTING NOTES

Racing at Addington With 69 horses eligible for the Maiden Handicap at the Matinee Meeting to be held at Addington next Saturday, there is a possibility that the race will be run in four divisions instead of three, and another £l5O added for the extra race. The safety number at the mile and a half post at Addington Is only 12, with permission to start three more horses from any one mark. This rule, however, does not apply to non-totalisator meetings, but if the Metropolitan * Club decides to add another division it will giye horses a better'chance and will help towards the real object of the. meeting, which is to graduate horses from the maiden classes.

Dunedin Cup Nominations The following nominations have been received for the Dunedin Cup, 4min 31sec class:—Gold Pot, Mankind, Happy Man, Shadow Maid. Horse Power, Regal, Burt Scott, Single Star. Foremost Junior, Accountant, Stormtost. Horses Penalised For their wins at Greymouth on Saturday, Flying Scott and Firewater have each been rehandicapped 48 yards in the Rothschild Handicap, and a similar penalty has been Imposed upon Inquisition and Jill in the Wildwood Handicap. The conditions governing the Rothschild Handicap say that the race is for unhoppled or half-hoppled maiden trotters. As there is no proviso that the horses must be maidens at time of nomination, it can be taken that the intention of the committee is to provide for horses that are maidens at the time of the race. It is now left to the committee of the club to decide whether Flying Scott and Firewater are eligible to race at Addington next Saturday. Well-bred Trotters Flying Scott, a winner at Greymouth on Saturday, is a five-year-old gelding by U Scott from a great trotter in Escapade; and. trained by M. Holmes, he was bred at Riccarton by Mr W.' J. Morland. Firewater, another successful trotter, has done a fair amount of racing and is a five-year-old mare by Calumet Axworth from Resound.

Pacer Sold Mighty who has shown some promise in his racing, was recently purchased by Mr L. C. Hardley, of Auckland, from Mr J. R. McKenzie, Mighty is six years old and is by Great Bingen from Great Actress.

A Promising Trotter Teddy Gregg made more than one mistake ni his races at Greymouth on Saturday, but when settled to. his gait he showed enough speed to suggest that he will win in the near future. His next start will be in the Rothschild Handicap at Addington next Saturday. In Western Australia No fewer than 105 nominations were received for the West Australian Trotting Cup. of £2220, which was run in divisions on December 19, the first and second in each division to start in the final on January 9. The following each won a heat:— Balgay Jim (12yds), Huon Cloud (12yds), Royal Sheik (24yds). Percy's Lad (24yds). Swift Lad} (72yds), Lee Tennessee (72yds). and Huon Globe (24vds). New Zealand pacers engaged included the following Grand Mogul (168 yds). King’s Guide (96), Tempest (96), Cavan Chief (84), Oxford Girl (60), Cloudv Range.(6o), Rollo (36). and Golden Eagle (24). Well-Named , Flying Scott, who has disappointed so often because of his bad breaking habits, put up a remarkable performance to- win the Westland Handicap at the Greymouth-

Westland Trotting Clubs’ meeting on Saturday. He broke up badly three times during the running, but In spite of his self-impsoed handicap, in which he lost more than 100 yards, he came home full of running, to win narrowly from Jimmy Wharton, another likely novice trotter. Flying Scott, who is by the American importation, U. Scott, from Escapade, has phenomenal speed and with time should develop into one of the speediest freegaiters in the Dominion. In New Colours

Jill, who was recently sold by Mr W. Warren, of Christchurch, to Mr M. Goular, and entered W. R. Butt’s stable, won at the first time of asking for the young Templeton trainer. Jill paced well throughout, and was always in the van with Frank Logan, in the President’s Handicap at Greymouth on Saturday. She won with a great deal to spare.

Air Speed A double winner at the October meeting, Air Speed again scored convincingly in the Kanieri Handicap at Greymouth on Saturday. This promising three-year-old son of Jack Potts from Swift Pointer was always the leader and was' never seriously challenged in the run to the post. Lady Dawn gave a solid performance, as also did Wee Jack and Envious, who was having his first outing for some years. Top Hand had every chance, but dropped right out of the contest. Great Waltaki made a good beginning, but soon dropped out also. A Disappointment Backed down almost to even money, Goldfinder was a big disappointment in the Greymouth Trotting Club Handicap, She followed the leader, Gay Lady, to the home bend, where she gave in and drifted to run a moderate fourth. The winner, Erlnack, a stoutly-bred mare who has done most of her racing in Southland, was always handy, with Glenlee, to the leading pair, and drew away to wifi convincingly in the straight, from Gay Lady and Glenlee. Tenpennybit failed to go away correctly and was soon hopelessly out of the contest. Firewater Opens Account

The only runner to trot evenly throughout, Firewater was far too good for Teddy Gregg at the finish of the Summer Handicap at Greymouth. She was the leader throughout from Teddy

Gregg, Compris, and Rival Chief, with the others In hopeless positions. Firewater shaped encouragingly for a novice, and has good breeding to recommend her, being by Calumet Axworth from Resound, a leading square-gaiter in her day. Overdue Win Inquisition scored an overdue but clearcut win in the Kimu Handicap at Greymouth, and returned a win dividend of

more than a quarter of a century, another outsider in Silver Flash being the runner-up. Inquisition waited on the loaders to the straight, and then came right away to win handsomely. Inquisition has mixed both trotting and pacing in the past, and his most r * cen * fort indicates that he is becoming more solid, though he was nowhere In nis nrsi start on Saturday.
