LIEUT.-COL. ROOSEVELT DECORATED
WASHINGTON. Jan. 15,
The United States Navy Department has announced that Lieutenant-Colonel James Roosevelt, United States Marines, son of President Roosevelt, has been awarded the Navy Cross for the part he played in the attack on the Japanese-held Makin Island in August. The citation says Colonel Roosevelt, who was second-in-command of the expedition, fully exposed himself to heavy machine-gun fire at great risk to himself. United States Marines who raided Makin Island, in the Gilbert Group, in August, wiped out the seaplane base and installations, destroyed three radio stations, 1000 barrels of aviation petrol, bombs, and foodstuffs. Only two Japanese out of a force of 300 survived the Marines’ sudden attack. The American losses were less than 10 per cent, of the enemy’s.
