PRIME MINISTER’S ASSISTANTS
ONE UNDER-SECRETARY APPOINTED
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 16. Referring to the appointment of Mr James Thorn, M.P. for Thames, as Parliamentary Under-Secretary to himself (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) said today that it was his intention to appoint Mr A. G. Osborne, M.P. for Onehunga, to a similar position later. These appointments would relieve him of a great deal of routine work and enable him to give more time to questions of major importance as well as to see for himself various defence projects throughout the Dominion. Asked if Messrs Thorn and Osborne would have any particular duties Mr Fraser said they would do work assigned to them. Mr Thorn would be giving particular attention to publicity in relation to the war effort, including the work of various departments associated with the effort. Mr Osborne at present was organising Labour’s campaign in support of Miss Mabel Howard, the party’s candidate for the Christchurch East by-election.
