FORCED LABOUR IMPRESSED

HUNGARIANS AND POLES ARRESTED

(Hec. 9.45 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 16. The Labour leader, Dr. Ley, in an article in “Der Angriff,” said: “Every single man who can carry a gun must carry it, every able-bodied woman in Germany must help to forge the weapons the soldiers need. It is evident that the Fuehrer alone bears the responsibility for this war and everything which happens.” Observers are of the opinion that drastic measures will be announced on - January 30, the tenth anniversary of the Nazi seizure of power, consisting of either the mobilisation of women or the calling up of further classes.

The Istanbul correspondent of the “New York Times” says it is reported from Budapest that Germany has ordered 15,000 conscripted Hungarian labourers to construct defence fortifications in the Carpathians against an eventual Russian attack from the Ukraine, via Hungary, into the BalIn a fresh wave of mass arrests and deportations in Boland, more than 1000 were rounded up at Warsaw alone, in the last two days, said the Polish Deputy-Prime Minister (M. Stanislaw Mikola jezyk). Gestapo storm troopers, armed with machine-guns and grenades, blocked the ends of streets and forced their way into houses. German persecution increased throughout Poland in December. Ten were publicly hanged in a Silesian town and mass arrests occurred in other Silesian districts. The Germans have begun to remove the entire population of Lublin. All children under 16 are being taken to Germany to be turned into Germans. After the discovery of an extensive plot against French collaborationists and German occupation authorities, 500 persons were arrested recently in Paris, reports Reuter’s Zurich correspondent. Large dumps of weapons were found in a network of tunnels. Parisians assert that this is the reason why Laval’s Government was not moved to Paris and also why the evacuation of 1,000,000 people from the city was planned.

Clashes between Parisians and German troops occur daily, especially when food is being distributed, although the Germans are using weapons without hesitation. The Vichy radio says that 103 were arrested at Lyons for illegal activities, including the loaders of “Combat” and “Franc Tireur.” with numerous other leaders and” liaison officials opposition movements. “Combat” and

“Franc Tireur” are the two most important underground newspapers in France, and round them strong movements have gathered, the Paris radio reports. . .
