S Iraq’s declaration of war on Ger- ( —}y, X*aiy, arid Japan, which is offijAly r announced in Bagdad, is wl£nw. welcomed in London. It is the fijst time in history that an independent Arab State has declared war on enemies of Britain as an ally of Britain. It is also stated that the decision was freely and constitutiorially reached.
Service Beyond Africa. —A report from Cape Town says that the Chief Justice (the Rt. Hon. N. J. de Wet), opening Parliament for the Governor-General (the Rt. Hon. Sir Patrick Duncan), who is ill, said that because of far-reaching successes in Africa, the war was passing from the country. “The services of part of the South African Army can usefully be transferred to other theatres and you will be asked to approve a proposal authorising voluntary service for members of the forces outside Africa,” he said.—London, January 16.
Japanese Women Pilots. —Coxswain James Prince, who is home on leave, said that ships’ doctors confirmed that one of the Japanese pilots who crashed their aeroplanes into the aircraftcarrier Hornet was a woman. —New York, January 16.
