GRADE I MEN IN INDUSTRY
REPLACEMENT WHERE POSSIBLE
CONSIDERATION BY APPEAL BOARDS
Grade 1 men whose military service has been postponed because they are engaged in essential industries are to be replaced in their civil occupations, wherever possible, by men of lower medical grading who are already serving in the Army, according to the secretary of the No. 2 Armed Forces Appeal Board (Mr E. D. Thompson). Mr Thompson yesterday confirmed a report that this policy was being adopted, but said the process of changing over men between the Army and industry would probably be a fairly long one. , , , , Mr Thompson said the appeal boards would work in conjunction with the Manpower Officer (Mr M. Ross). 'Mr Ross and hiS officers had a knowledge of industrial manpower conditions which the appeal boards did not have. The compilation of lists of grade 1 men in industries and suitable grade 2 and 3 men in the Army would be, necessary. One of the difficulties foreseen by Mr Thompson was that the number .of grade 2 and 3 men suitable for transfer to any industry might not be' the same as the number of grade 1. men who had been retained in that industry. , . , Mr Thompson said the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board was at present engaged in reviewing all appeals for or by grade 1 mem
