FENCES
man. and the Christchurch Beautifying Society, draw a pretty and idealistic picture of the city streets with all the fences removed. There is, however, another side to the question, which property owners would do well to consider before removing their fences; and this is based on practical experience. The owners of fenceless properties must expect to have their choice bulbs and other plants removed at frequent intervals; to have stray dogs wander all over the property: to have stray cats dig up their gardens (there were eight the other morning in the garden); to have drunk and other undesirable persons wandering round the property at night; and at week-ends to have no privacy whatever. I now favour a fence six feet high.—Yours, etc., H. HILL. January 13, 1943.
