FIGHTING IN BURMA
ENEMY DEFENCE OF RATHEDAUNG WIDESPREAD BOMBING ATTACKS (8.0. W.) RUGBY, Jan. 10. A joint communique from India states that in the Arakan district fighting continues on either side of the Mayu river, both in the Donbak area on the Mayu Peninsula, and round Rathedaung. Our troops are maintaining their pressure against the enemy defending Rathedaung. A formation of Royal Air Force Blenheims escorted by fighters bombed enemy occupied villages on Akyab Island. Elsewhere in Burma other aircraft on offensive patrol set fire to railway trucks and made low-level machine-gun attacks on Japanese supply sampans. Last night heavy bombers went to Akyab Island and dropped several tons of heavy bombs on the villages which the Blenheims had attacked during the day. None of our aircraft is missing. A Chungking report states that United States bombers and fighters raided Bhamo, in Burma, for the second day in succession, starting several fires and sinking at least one barge. Fighters machine-gunned the Loiwing aerodrome and enemy trucks on the Burma Road.
