APPEALS IN LAST BALLOT
APPLICATIONS FROM ABOUT 1400 RESERVISTS
The number of appeals against service lodged by reservists in the Christchurch military area, who were called up in the last ballot, is expected to total almost one-third of those named. The nineteenth ballot, published on December 22, included the names of men between 41 and 46 who have families, young men who have reached service ago, some volunteers for overseas service, and others already engaged in home defence units.
After an extension of 10 days, the final appeals were received yesterday and the total then in hand was 1400. To this must be added appeals from the public services which are lodged in a block. The number of men called in the Christchurch military area was 4787. The medical examination of those called up will not begin until the end of the month, and by the time these gradings have been posted it will be some time before the appeal boards can begin hearing the applications. The first sittings of the appeal boards for the Now Year will be held on Monday, when cases held over from 1042 will be disposed of. These are expected to take some weeks.
