SPORTING

TURF GOSSIP

Holiday Arrangements For some years a team from the Chokebore stable has been sent to the Maaawatu and Wairarapa holiday meetings, out this year it is proposed to race four horses, Shikari, Donnybrook Fair, Straight Bat, and Rangi at Dunedin (Boxing Day), Wyndhnm, and Invercargill (New Year), and to return for the second Dunedin programme on January 9. This will be the first time for 25 years that the stable has sent representatives further south than Dunedin.

C. Dawson plans to make the same trip with Wedding Ring. S. Barr will have Hurry Girl and Warfield at Wingatui on Boxing Day, and will take them, together with Winning Agnes and Gallopode (Myosotis—ldolise), to Wyndham and Invercargill, returning to Wingatui for the second meeting. A similar programme will be followed by R. Covcny, who will be in charge of Military Maid and Royal Rae. Coveny has been training C. Humphries’s team since Humphries entered camp some weeks ago.

Mrs Campbell will take Nightglass and Cheap Lodging to the Manawatu and Marton meetings, after which Cheap Lodging is to be sent to Hastings, where her owner lives. Gayfort was nominated for the trip, but has been put aside for a while.

Botany, Stourbrdige, Pallid, and Fur Coat are booked to undertake the southern circuit. Pallid’s programme will depend on how he faros in the meantime, as he has been suffering from feet trouble whiqii prevented him racing at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Interesting Arrival Winsome Sister, dam of Royal Lancer, this week produced a colt foal to Siegfried. The new arrival is thus a brother to Invulnerable, winner of the McLean Stakes in October.

Related Glimpse of Form Shikari ran his best race for nearly two seasons in the Members’ Handicap at Ricearton. His throat trouble evidently did not affect him. There is no doubt about Shikari's ability when he is fit, and he may do well over the holidays. A win for him would certainly be well received in Ricearton circles.

A Big Task Nelson, who won the Auckland Cup in three successive years, 1885, 1886, and 1887, with 7-8, 8-8, and 9-12 respectively, bolds the weight-carrying record for the race. Kindergarten's task of carrying 10-2 in this year's race has not frightened his supporters, who have already made him favourite. Hazlett Gold Cup

The conditions attached to the James Ilazlett Gold Cup provide that winners, .since August 1, of any race or races of the collective value of £4OO to the winner shall earrv a penalty of 51b, of £750 to the winner 71b, and of £IOOO to the winner 101b extra. Royal Lancer, having won £1520 this season, will have to carry 9-18, Kindergarten (£1015) also 9-13, and Lord Nuffield (£910) 9-11.

Winning Sires Twentv-six different stallions were represented in the stake-earners at the New Zealand Cup meeting, but 10 of them were the sires of winners of less than £IOO The leading sires were:—lrish Lancer £I4OO, Salmagundi £I2OO, Ringmaster £IOSO, Paladin £O7O, Mr Standfast £3lO, .Strnighlcnurse £9lO. Phaleron Bay £075, Kincardine £490, and Siegfried £470.

TROTTING NOTES

Ashburton T.C. With a limit of 48 yards in the Ashburton Trotting Club Handicap on Boxing Dav. a nomination of 20 horses ensures that the race will be full o£ interest. The stake is one o£ £O2O, and the class-. 3min 21 sec for a mile and a half, a tw’o mile rale of about 4min :ioscc. Tire' entry received is in contrast to that accorded the principal event at tine Wellington meeting, at which a 4min 20scc class two miles race of £7OO, drew only six nominations. Coquette, Hardy Oak, Lady Milne. Clockwork, and Dusky Sound are engaged in both races, and it would not be surprising to find the Wellington field still further reduced in numbers. A Much-Raced Pacer Bayard has been nominated *or the principal events at the Wellington meeting next Saturday, but his name is not included in the list for Ashburton. This suggests that he will soon be returned to his Auckland owners. Only a pony, Bayard has done a lot of hard racing, and his third in the New Zealand Cup represented one of his best performances. Doiiblc-Gailcd Dark Hazard, probably the best doublcgaited horse racing in New Zealand today, has been entered among Hie crack pacers in the Ashburton Club Handicap and also in the Midsummer Handicap for unhopplcd trotters. His better chance appeals to be among the pacers from the limit mark, tor in the Midsummer Handicap lie is set to give away 90 yards to a very useful field. A Difficult Task Fine Art, who at times has shown brilliant form, has not always been consistent, and in important races at Addington lie has failed his supporters more than once Now in the care ot L. A. Maidens. Fine Art is set to give away 48 yards In the Ashburton Handicap, a formidable task for any horse Burt Scott, Hardy Oak, Countless and Coquette may be the early favourites for this race. Registrations Recent registrations of horses with the New Zealand Trotting Association include the following:—lnnkeeper, b g by Wrack —Hostess; Dolly Scott, by U. Scott—Dice; Forewarned by Swordsman—Fair Warning; Kitty Kelly by Jack Potts—Lux Lunac; Stida Bay by Jack Potts—Lady Turmoil: Who Knows by Quite Sure— Jennv Bell, Jum; Fourlcaf. by Clovcidalc —Lizzie Bond, and Wilburshaw by Indianapolis—Great Gem.
