SHORTAGE OF WOOL APPRAISERS

FIRM’S APPEAL FOR MANAGER “Because of the complicated nature of the work and because we have no one to undertake these duties connected with the appraisals of wool, we’re just stuck,” declared William Alan Fleming, Timaru, manager of Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., in support of the company’s appeal for the release from camp of Lieutenant George Burborough, formerly manager of the company’s wool department for eight years. The appeal wafe heard before the No. 10A Armed Forces Appeal Board at Timaru. “Experienced wool men are required because of the requirements of the wool regulations, and the'importance of having an expert available .to make the wool appraisals against the Government’s representatives,” said Mr Fleming. Moreover, the handling and stacking of thousands of bales of wool to maintain access to classes of wool with regard to priority of preference, called for expert knowledge and wide experience, said Mr Fleming. He explained that it was not a mere matter of receiving wool and stacking it up to the ceiling of the store, but arranging the wool by skilful classification to enable the Government’s shipping orders to be executed promptly, with a minimum amount of handling. "Last season we handled 11,000 bales of wool, and now Burborough is in camp we have no one to act as pur appraiser and supervise the stacking of the wool in store, in readiness for the appraisal dates, the first of which is December 12," said Mr Fleming. He added that every endeavour had been made to replace Burborough. “Last year the firm had been able to borrow one of the Christchurch wool appraisers. but that was impossible now because the Christchurch man was also in camp. The firm was also without expert wool stackers and its difficulties were shared by other wool stores. Mr R. S. Gillies: The position is that you have to value against the appraisers acting for the Government? Mr Fleming: That Is so. The District Manpower Officer (Mr D. G. Wallace), who was present to support the appeal, said all efforts to fill Burborough’s place had failed, and he had no hesitation in recommending the necessary release from camp being granted. The board decided to recommend Burborough’s release from camp from November 28 until April 15, 1943. SITUATIONS VACANT. WANTED, Second Cook. Apply White Hotel. : 6763 WANTED, Housemaid-Waitress.
