ROYAL SOCIETY
ANNUAL REPORT The annual report to be presented to members of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand makes reference to the deaths of two valued members. Dr. F, W. Hilgendorf and Dr. John Guthrie. Dr. Hilgendorf had been a member of the council for 15 consecutive years and was president in 1907, 1923, and 1938. The council had held one special and 10 ordinary meetings during the year, the report stated, but deaths and service with the armed forces had
caused many changes in the personnel. The final signature of the library merger agreement with Canterbury University College had taken place early in the present year. Membership, which now numbered 138, had increased slightly during the year, but the Field Club of the society reported little activity because of difficulties of transport and absence of members with the armed forces. ’ The finances of the society were satisfactory, and the general account showed a credit balance of £2O 11s lOd.
