METROPOLITAN E.P.S. COMMITTEE

SUMNER TO CO-OPERATE At the direction of the Minister of Civil Defence (the Hon. D. Wilson), the Sumner Borough Council, at its meeting last evening, received from the Regional Commissioner (Colonel W. T. Churchward) a copy of the resolution passed by a meeting of local authorities when representatives were present from the Christchurch City Council, Riccarton, Lyttelton, Sumner, Waimairi, Paparua, Heathcote, and Halswell. The Mayor (Mr J. E. Tail) gave a report of the meeting. Cr. F. W. J. Murdoch said that the proposal to set up a Metropolitan Central E.P.S. Committee, with representation of all the local bodies concerned in place of the existing central committee, would make for better co-ordination. The council adopted his resolution “That the Sumner Borough Council agrees to co-operate in respect of the principle of the terms contained in the resolution passed at a meeting called by and presided over by the Hon. Minister of Civil Defence, and held in Christchurch on the 13th instant, as set out hereunder:— ‘That it be a recommendation to the local bodies concerned there be established a Metropolitan Central Committee E.P.S. to replace the existing central committee, consisting of such local body representation as may be mutually agreed upon.’ ” The motion was seconded by Cr. J. L. Gant. It was also agreed that the Mayor of Sumner be fully authorised to act for and on behalf ■of the Sumner Borough Council in respect of E.P.S. matters.
