TROTTING NOTES

Winners in Southland Certainty, a winner at the Southland Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday, is a five-year-old gelding by Quite Sure— Azaleas, and for some time he has enjoyed a reputation for great speed. Last season he was twice successtul, but disappointed several times. He is owned and trained at Nightcaps by B. Rushton. Buster, who won the Waverley Handicap, is a six-year-old gelding by Roy de Oro— Honest Dillon, and this is thi first time he has shown any form. The second horse. Fancy Goods, is one of T. H. Gunning’s Oamaru team, and is a six-year-old brown mare by U. Scott from Entice. A Difficult Task El Peta has proved himself a good trotter in several races, but he has not enjoyed the best of luck in his racing in Canterbury. He is engaged in two events at the Forbury Park neeting, but in each race he is set to give away 96 yards—a formidable task for any horse opposed to young and improving trotters.

MELBOURNE CUP

COLONUS BEATS FAVOURITES A SLOW RUN RACE (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright.) (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Nov. 22. Colonus, who found six furlongs beyond him a little more than 12 months ago, revelled in the Flemington conditions and spreadeagled the Melbourne Cup field. Tlie victory surprised the large attendance, as did the minor placings of Phocion and Heart’s Desire. The former has not yet won a race. Heart’s Desire put up a meritorious performance as the float conveying her and Ronollve broke down on the way to the course, and the start was delayed five minutes to give time to saddle up. Ronolive was withdrawn. Tranquil Star, who was second for a long , way. weakened badly, and Great 1 Britain was one of the first horses beaten. | Darkfelt had every chance, but showed no dash from the home turn. Skipton was always hopelessly placed. The race was devoid of interest because of the easy win. Colonus is ow.ied by Mr L. O. Mgnck, who has been represented in the Melbourne Cup many times. Colonus, formerly trained by Cecil Godby. is now under the care of F. Manning, who deserves all the credit for the horse’s improvement. Colonus cost his present owner 150 guineas , and has won more than £7OOO in stakes. The time is the slowest since Peter Pan’s 3min 40isec. The apprentice, H. McCloud, had his first Cup mount last year. He said the other riders played into his hands by allowing Colonus to have matters his Own way. East End proved the best three-year-old filly of the season by winning the Oaks. She withstood a strong challenge from Philander, while Reply Paid was a fair third. East End is owned by the Victoria Racing Club chairman, Mr B. Turnbull. In nine starts she hgs had four wins, and two seconds, and has won £3450 in stakes. Following are the results:— MELBOURNE CUP. or £7500; two miles. —L. O. Menck’s COLONUS by Portofino— Genoa 7-2 H. McCloud 1; C. Robbie’s Phocion by Manitoba—La Ballerina 7-5 L. Armficld 2; A. E. Bang’s Heart’s Desire by Ronsard—Mary's March 7-2 A. Forest 3 There were 24 starters. Colonus went to the front at the start, and was never headed. Tranquil Star and Great Britain were his nearest attendants most of the way. Great Britain dropped back six furlongs from home, and Tranquil Star failed at the home turn, Colonus was never in danger of defeat over the last half-mile. Phocion finished gamely sev'm lengths away, "'Hli five lengths hack to Heart’s Desire. Then came Darkfelt, Gusher, Wilson, Similar, and Pandinl, with Tranquil Star thirteenth, Great Britain sixteenth. Skipton seventeenth, and Hestia last. The' time was 3m)n 33jsec. Sectional times were; Half-mile 52sec, last ha'f-mile 55sec. THE OAKS STAKES, of £2000; for thrcc-year-old fillies; one mile and a half. -EASTEND 8-5 V. Hartney 1; Philander 8-5 H.
