FRENCH COLONIES IN WEST INDIES

AGREEMENT WITH U.S. REPORTED (Rec. 1.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON. Nov. 22. The Washington correspondent of the “New York Times” says that the State Department’s representative (Mr Samuel Reber) and the French High Commissioner of Martinique (Admiral Robert) have reached an agreement assuring the independence of the French West Indies and French Guiana in the light of the new European situation. The agreement removes almost completely any chances that the United States might be called upon by events to occupy these possessions for the duration of the war. Details of the agreement have not been revealed, but the most significant aspect of the new situation is that Admiral Robert has detached himself from Laval and is now acting completely on his own authority.
