AIR ATTACKS IN BURMA

iJAPANESE AERODROMES BOMBED (Rec. 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, Nov. 22, The largest formation of United States Army Air Force bombers ever to operate from India on Friday night attacked the railway depot at Mandalay, which is a maintenance centre for railways throughout Burma, states a New Delhi communique. Many tons of bombs were dropped on the repair shops and switching yards, and a large warehouse. Big fires were started. No enemy fighters were encountered and the anti-aircraft fire was weak and ineffective. All our aeroplanes returned. Medium and heavy bombers of the Royal Air Force yesterday attacked the airfields at Toungoo and Mingaladon. Many tons of bombs were dropped and runways were blown up and hangars set on fire. A war communique issued from New Delhi states that on Friday night a formation of Royal Air Force Blenheim bombers bombed the Japanese aerodrome at Magwe in Burma. Bursts were observed on the runways and dispersal points. Enemy night fighters attempted to intercept, but no combats took place and no aircraft are missing. On Thursday morning a formation of Blenheims, escorted by fighters, attacked the Japanese aerodrome at Pakokku, scoring hits on the runways and dispersal points. All returned. Photographic' reconnaissance of Akyab confirms that one of the two merchantmen hit on November 10 is sunk north of the main jetty.
