PUNISHMENT BY CANE
Sir,—l read with interest the letter of one of your correspondents concerning flogging in schools. I would like to point out to him that the abolition .of corporal punishment would mean yet another retrograde step in our education system. The state of discipline in our schools is far from praiseworthy and the use of the cane does serve to promote some semblance of this quality. Your correspondent goes on as though caning were a writhing torture resulting in the victim’s hostility towards his master. I have heard from influential quarters that this is not the case and I would like to add that an increased use of the cane would make our children far better citizens. One cannot for a minute say that our leaders to-day are any the worse off fpr having experienced the right end of a cane. One might qven go as far as to say that it is the frequent use of the cane in youth that has made our men the great fighters that they are.—Yours, etc., ONE WHO HAS EXPERIENCED. November 18. 1942.
