ARMED SERVICES APPEALS

DECISIONS OF NO. 1 BOARD 1 Mild surprise was expressed at the meeting of the No 1 Armed Forces Ap- . peal Board yesterday, when an appellant, whose appeal was based on grounds cf conscience, appeared in the box In soldier's uniform. It was soon evident that the appellant was not an objector on the grounds of consilience, for he said that in seven months in the Army he had been quite happy. All he wanted was a transfer from the infantry—in which the marching badly affected his feet—to some other unit. The board recommended ; that appellant be reboarded. 1 Another soldier, who appealed on the grounds of conscience, said he was quite prepared to tight for New Zealand in New Zealand: but the chairman of the board (Mr E. A. Lee) said the grounds of appeal were not sufficient. An objec. tor on the grounds of conscience must be opposed to all forms of warfare. The appellant, In answer to Mr Lee on the question of soldiers fighting overseas, said he did not believe that attack was the. best method ot defence. Appellant called his father, who said that too many young men were being sent overseas and only old men left to defend the country. Mr Lee: The board cannot take notice of everyone wno expresses opinions as to the right and wiong ways of running the country. The hoard does not make the laws and is only required to administer them. The appeal was dismissed. Mr E. A. Lee presided, and with him were Mr J. E, Jones and Mr G. M. Hall. An appeal 'ey Ronald Eric Lewthwaite, builder, on the grounds of conscience, was struck out, appellant having been medically graded 4. Mr J. S. Barnett presided, and with him were Mr G. T. Thurston and Mr S. L, Wright. Mr E. D. Thompson appeared for the Crown, and Captain S. Bowron represented the military author!- , ties. A strong protest was made by Captain Bowron against remarks passed by Mr K, G. Archer, who appeared in support of an appeal by S. Gurdler, a contactor. In asking for exemption from service, Mr Archer said his client was doing valuable work in his present capacity and if sent to camp would probably be set to peeling potatoes. Captain Bowron: I resent the insinuation made against the Army by Mr Archer, and it is hardly his place to tell the board that a man will be set to peeling potatoes, The man has been classified grade 2, and the Army will employ him to the best possible advantage.
