ANNIVERSARY SERVCES

WOODEND METHODIST CHURCH Anniversary services were held recently at the Woodend Methodist Church, and there was a good congregation at both services. The Rev. N. P. Larsen (Christchurch) was the preacher in the morning, and Miss Burnett was organist. Special anniversary hymns were sung by the children, who had been trained by Mrs George Little. A duet was sung by Mrs A. R. Morris and Miss June Robertshaw. The Rev. J. H. Hall conducted the evening service, and duets were sung by Misses Milly and Phyllis Grennell, and by Leicester Robertshaw and Edna . Cobden. The collections were the largest for many years. The anniversary was continued on Monday evening when a social was held in the Sunday school. Recitations and special songs were given by Sunday school scholars, and the annual prize distribution followed. Miss Burnett gave a good report of the Sunday school. TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD Mrs Lawrence Wilson, president, presided at the monthly meeting of the Christchurch Central Townswomens’ Guild. The speaker was the Mayoress, Miss E. Couzins, who is patroness of the Guild, and whose subject was "Planning.” She thanked the guild for its various activities in the city. These included the sale of Health stamps at the post offices, the sending of parcels for the lepers at Makogai, the raising of money for the guild’s Welcome Club fund, and for the Nurse Maude Association. Members have also made garments for the patriotic council, the Lady Galway Guild, and for sister townswomen's guilds in England. These garments were on view during the afternoon. Members of the singing and drama circles provided a programme during the afternoon. Floral tributes were presented to Miss Couzins, to Mrs Frame, who dressed a doll by which £8 was raised for the guild’s Welcome Club fund, and to the retiring executive officers, Mrs Reg. H. Smith and Mrs Cyril Plumridge. - -
