H.M.N.Z.S. HAUTAPU LAUNCHED
MINESWEEPER BUILT AT PORT CHALMERS SECOND COMPLETED IN LAST TEN WEEKS (P.A.) DUNEDIN, November 19. Just 10 weeks after the launching of H.M.N.Z.S. Aroha, the first minesweeper constructed at the shipyards at Port Chalmers, her sister ship, H.M.N.Z.S. Hautapu, was launched successfully in perfect weather to-day by Mrs Adam Hamilton, wife of the Associate Minister of Supply, in the presence of more than 100 guests. . The Hautapu, an all-steel ship, is 135 feet long, with a beam of 24 feet and a depth of 13 feet 6 inches, and was built at a cost of £39,000. The Hon. Adam Hamilton, who acted as host for the Government, said that New Zealand’s war effort would stand comparison with that of any other Allied country. There were some people who grumbled and criticised, he added, but he did not mind how much they did that so long as they worked as they were doing at present.
