U.S. AIMS IN AFRICA
STATEMENT BY GENERAL PATTON (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 18. Major-General G. S. Patton in a proclamation to the people of Morocco, said he wanted normal political and economic life to continue as far as possible. The United States forces were in North Africa with the sole purpose of fighting against the Axis. General Patton thanked the Sultan of Morocco for all he had done, and said the United States forces would not infringe his authority. He also thanked General Nogues for his cooperation. In an interchange of messages with General Eisenhower. Lord Louis Mountbattcn, chief of Combined Operations, extended his congratulations and referred to the assault on North Africa as “'the greatest combined operation of the war.” General Eisenhower, in reply, said: “We owe much to the assistance we received from Combined Operations and to their work in the preparatory and assault stages." The Paris radio has issued a warning to French seamen and shipowners that State tribunals will in future deal with the scuttling of ships, for which severe penalties, including death, may be
