APPEALS FOR CITY COUNCIL EMPLOYEES
Sir, —The Mayor’s reply to “Unemployed” merely begs the question. Surely there is someone at the council who knows what positions are or are likely to be vacant. If not, each officer should refer applicants to the other departments. It is time special qualifications and key positions ceased to be acknowledged. Every employer knows the military obligations of his employees and has had amnle time to give those who have done their bit. or are not eligible, a chance to acquire the qualifications required. Seeing the work being done by the women drivers in the Army and Air Force, and by. the land girls, one wonders how an appeal would be made for a driver. Even editors have to do their bit. If any council employee has to serve, unemployed will have the pleasure of helping to pay the subsidy on his wages which our council has awarded to employees on service.—Yours, etc.. EQUALITY OF SACRIFICE. September 11 1942. [“I have nothing to add to my original explanation,” said the Mayor, Mr E. H. Andrews, when the above letter was referred to him,]
