VICEREGAL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 22. The Governor-General (Sir Cyril Newall) and Lady Newall left Wellington this morning to pay their first official visits to Dannevirke, Waipawa. and Waipukurau. They will return to Wellington on Thursday. The Minister of War Expenditure (the Hon. S. G. Holland) will arrive from Wellington on Friday. He will travel to Dunedin on Sunday night to address the annual meeting of the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association, and will return to Wellington by air on Tuesday. The Minister of Primary Production for War Purposes (the Hon, W. J. Poison) and his secretary (Mr H. I. Forde) will arrive in Christchurch tomorrow afternoon. The Minister will meet the Production Council in the evening, and will leave next morning for Dunedin.
Sympathy with the relatives of members who had died during the year was expressed at last evening’s meeting of the Christchurch and United Swimming Club and two minutes’ silence was observed out of respect to the members, Messrs Walter Johnston and A. C. Cottrell, life members, and N. A’Court, S. Kindon, and F. J. Cook, who were serving in the forces overseas.
Captain Cyril Gaby, formerly of Geraldine, who has been engaged for some years as an area customs officer in the service of the Chinese Government, has advised Mr William Gaby (Geraldine) that his family has arrived at Durban and will probably be returning home. This cabled advice is the first news received of Captain Gaby for a year: Captain B. V. Cooksley, Dominion president of the Commercial Gardeners’ Association, will visit Christchurch tomorrow.
Messrs T. O. Bishop (chairman), A. Prendcrville. and C. J. Strongman, members of the Coal Council, are visiting Greymouth, attending to minor local disputes about the coal industry.
