AVONSIDE CLUB Hie Avonside Tennis Club will corn* mence the season with a much depleted membership, said Mr George when declaring the season open on Saturday. No fewer than 45 active members of the club were in the armed forces, but though there were difficulties to be faced, the members who remained were determined to carry on until relieved by the returned m Mr E. A. Lee, chairman of the management committee of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, said the different clubs might rely on the governing body giving all the assistance it possibly Could to clubs which were carrying on. Mr J. Mercer, president of the associa* titm, urged members to keep lawn tennis up to the highest standard possible, in preparation for the return of soldier members. ST. PAUL’S CLUB Keenness in the game of lawn tennis was shown in the big attendance at the opening of the season of St. Paul $ Club on Saturday. The Rev. H. M. Cocks presented the prizes won in last seasons competitions. The courts were in good order and wery fully occupied during the afternoon. ELMWOOD CLUB The following officers were elected at the seventeenth annual general meeting held this week:—Patron, Mr H. Houand; president, the Hon. S. G Holland, JM.P*! vice-presidents, Messrs H. R. Hamilton, A. R. Larcomb, M. E. Lyons, W. D. Revington, and J. A. S. Marrls; hon. secretary. Mr R. S. W. Owen; hon. treasurer, Mr J. M. Hargreaves: club captain. Mr S. D. Bannehr; vice-captain, Mr G. K. Me* Allum; hon. auditor, Mr F. Williams; com*; mittee, Mrs C. Tfeeby, Messrs A, T. BeR., W. L. Cannlngton, B. M. Field, T, A.. Leitch. and W. D. Revington; womens captain, Mrs P. W. Miller; women’s vicecaptain. Mrs A. H. Tocker; delegates to Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, Messrs Owen, BannehT, Bell, and Leitch. Mr J. A. S. Marrls (hon. treasurer for 11 years) was elected a life member. Opening day was fixed for Saturday, September 26.
