Mrs J. Lorimer (Edgeware road), a vice-president of the Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women, will leave to-morrow for Wellington to attend a meeting of the Dominion executive. Miss Ruth Herrick, director of the W.R.N.S., arrived in Dunedin from the north on Saturday and interviewed between 50 and 60 girls who had applied for positions in the naval service. Mrs N. Stevenson (the Manse, Oxford) is the guest of Mrs Lawrence Denton, Culverden. Mrs D. Worrall-Smith has been appointed to the staff of the district manpower office in Dunedin. As personnel officer she will deal with problems concerning the direction of women and girls to essential work. ' Mrs Annie Quinn, who recently died at Upper Hutt at the age of 92, was well known in the hotel business in Wellington. She was born in Ireland and came to New Zealand at the age of 10, her parents being among the West Coast pioneers. Soon after her arrival she married Mr Patrick Quinn, who died nearly 50 years ago. At the Civic Theatre yesterday afternoon a sacred community sing in aid of the Mayoress’s parcels fund was held under the auspices of the Christchurch Harmonic Society and church choirs. Mr Victor C. Peters was conductor, Mr W. Melville Lawry was organist, and solos were sung by Miss Phyllis Mander and Mr Keith Berry. The death has occurred of Miss Lora Florence Gee, proprietress of the Castlebar Private Hotel, Khyber Pass road, Auckland, for more than 30 years. Born in Christchurch in 1868, Miss Gee went to Auckland with her parents, Mr and Mrs George Gee, pioneers of Canterbury. She was interested in dramatic art, and was one of the earliest members of the Dickens Club. Proposals by the trustees of the late Mrs Marianne Caughey Preston for the erection of a home for women on a property of seven and a half acres in Upland and Ventnor roads, Remuera, Auckland, were approved by the Auckland City Council last Thursday night. Mrs Caughey Preston, formerly Mrs W. H. Smith, who died in September. 1938, leaving an estate valued at under £450,000, bequeathed the residue, estimated at £200,000 or more, together with an endowment of £20,000 and part of a Herne Bay property, for the establishment and maintenance of a rest home for aged infirm or impecunious women, admission to be irrespective of religious beliefs.

Something different every day. —6 MISSIONARY MARKET £SO RAISED ON SATURDAY The younger members of the Anglican Church in and round Christchurch showed their practical interest in the welfare of the Melanesian Mission by organising a missionary market, which was held on Saturday in St. Michapl’s Hall, Durham street, to raise funds for the furtherance of work amongst the youth of Melanesia. The Dean of Christchurch, the Very Rev. A. K. Warren, presided at the gathering, and others present were the Rev. F. N. Taylor (St. Michael’s), Mrs A. Mason (Malaita, Solomon Islands), Mr Peter Garrity (New Hebrides), and Miss Lily Cameron, honorary secretary of the mission. Deaconess Heni Park, who formally opened the market, asked all young people to pray for the missions, to learn about the missions, to work for them, to give to them, and to help others to be interested in them. The stallholders were St. Mary’s Girls’ Bible Class (Merivale) under Miss J. Sewell, Avonside Sunday School, St. Barnabas’ Bible Class under Miss D. Redgrave, St. Nicholas’ Sunday School under Miss Edna Pratley, St. Saviour’s Sunday School under Miss Sylvia Tregonning, St. Phillips’ Sunday School under Master E. McCalman, Melanesian Mission under Misses L. and A. Cameron, St. Luke’s Girls’ Club and Bible class in charge of Mrs J. B. Lynch, St. John the Evangelist’s Sunday School in charge of Miss P. Fade, St. Paul’s (Papanui) Bible Class under Mrs Besant, Associates of Melanesia, directed by Miss D. Cooper and Mrs J. Brown, St. Peter’s (Upper Riccarton) Sunday School under Miss M. Lincoln, St. Stephen’s (Shirley) Sunday School in charge of Misses D. Thomas, V. Elam, V. Morgan, St. Michael’s School and King’s Messengers under Miss Joan Berry, and St. Mark’s (Opawa) Sunday School. St. Augustine’s Sunday School and St. ’ Mary’s (Addington) Bible Class held separate sales and sent the proceeds lo swell the funds. The proceeds of the market were about £SO.

PILGRIMS’ ASSOCIATION Nearly 450 guests attended the quarterly social gathering of the Canterbury Pilgrims' and Early Settlers’ Association held on Saturday in the Caledonian Hall. The president (Mr E. R. Webb), after welcoming members and their friends, expressed regret at the death of Mrs Clothier, of Invercargill, one of the pilgrims who had arrived in the First Four Ships, and said that Mr R. Evans, one of the two surviving pilgrims, was too ill to attend the party. Mr Webb announced that the committee of the association had decided that it was necessary to provide a building in which to preserve relics of the early settlement of Canterbury, so a building fund was being opened with the hope that ‘ the association would soon be able to acquire rooms of its own. A musical programme arranged by Mr J. Brandon included songs by Mr T. M Charters, Mrs Davies, Mrs J. T. Robertson, the Rev. F. N. Taylor, character songs by Mrs Price and chorus, duets by Mrs Davies and Mrs Maclachlan and instrumental items played by Messrs Harrison and Titmus. of the Southern Star orchestra. Tea was served by the women’s committee.
