LETTER TO POWER BOARD

LOSS OF. WAGES BECAUSE OF CURRENT FAILURE

The Banks Peninsula Power Board, at its monthly meeting, received a letter from the Akaroa Homespun Tweed Company claiming that through an interruption of the supply of current on July 17, wages amounting to £3 5s had been lost. The company pointed out that stoppages in current supply would prevent the installation of further plant at the Akarpa factory, Mr F. Davis said he understood the company wanted an assurance that power would not be cut off during working hours, and the supply should be adjusted to ensure this was done. The engineer to the board (Mr F. A. Lewthwaite) said he would make a test for the working of the factory when the Akaroa plant only was available. Reporting on a complaint by the Banks Peninsula Rabbit Board ythat the flashlights at Motukarara were not working satisfactorily, the engineer said that he had examined the lights and had put in a .new system which he hoped would be satisfactory. He, said it was arranged that the board should renew lamps when required. A motion that the rabbit board be granted a concession for loss of supply was lost. The engineer reported that lines on the Le Son’s Bay area were receiving attention. Sixteen , poles had been erected and five removed during the month. ’

It was reported that the- total number of electric ranges connected to the system was 441, 266 dairy, motors, and 273 general purpose motors. Mr H. 'Menzies raised the question of. servicing refrigerators, as owing to petrol restrictions • Christchurch could not service them. A. motion was carried that the engineer jbe asked to arrange for a service man to examine refrigerators and carry out repairs on Banks Peninsula.

The engineer reported that arrangements had been made for certain E.P.S. men in Akaroa to cut off power in the event of the board’s serviceman not being available to do so. Mr Lewthwaite said these men would receive instruction. ‘ Accounts amounting to £845 13s 8d were passed for payment.

and D. Smith were solid. Anderson and Altken, in the halves, were two of Western’s hardest workers, both on attack and defence. Of the forwards, J. Smith was the pick. J. Milligan, at centre, made an Improved showing as an opportunist. The Army defence was solid, but the halves, particularly in the second spell, failed with their passing. Of the forwards. Judkins, at outside left, was easily the best, with Shipp and Brooks also prominent. Milligan (2) and C. Graham scored for Western, and A. Judkins for Army. The Army team’s other goal come off a Western back. Referee; Mr J. Smith.

AIR FORCE V. FIELD REGIMENT Showing better all-round team work in spite of withdrawals* in the second spell, Air Force romped home against Field Regiment at Wigram by two clear goals. Apart from Regiment’s lack of combination, the only outstanding feature of the game was the display of the usual goalkeeper, C. Green, who scored two goals. Green was not brilliant, but be was always handy. Neither team played good football. Passing and finish were poor, with Air Force coming out on top with a better understanding of . combined play. Of the Air Force forwards Tweedie and Heath were always prominent, with Green and Webster also showing up. The halves were well led by Waddell and Mackay. Sprange proved a resolute, if somewhat over-spectacular full-back. For Field Regiment Caskie, Scott, and Marks were the pick of tee backs, and Warman and Quartermain the best of the forwards. C, Green (2), L. Heath (2). and C, Webster scored for Air Force, and W. Scott, A. Quartermain. and S. McEwan for Regiment.
