FERTILISER FOR FARMERS
PRIMARY PRODUCTION COUNCIL
A decision to urge on the Government the need for the same quantities of fertiliser for cultivation as were used last year to be available again for new grass after crop this season, and that any reduction should be made on the top-dressing distribution, was passed at a meeting of the Mid-Can-terbury Primary Production Council at Ashburton yesterday. The Department of Agriculture wrote that farmers would be allowed lewt of fertiliser to the acre for new grass after crop, and applications would have to be made by August 15, with an extension to August 30. The chairman (Mr H. C. B. Withell) said that the regulations governing the distribution of fertilisers had been finalised, but they had not been received at Ashburton. The Director of Primary Production (Mr R, B. Tennent) wrote asking how many blacksmiths were operating in the district and how many were required for nominal purposes. It was reported that there were 16 men in the Ashburton County and these were all necessary, Mrs Grigg mentioned the tour which she will shortly make of the Dominion with Mrs P. Fraser, wife of the Prime Minister, to receive enlistments for the Women’s Land Corps, and she said that she would ask for the help of all Primary Production Councils. There had been some difficulty in placing men released from military camps on farms, said a letter from the Director of Primary Production. Councils might have been approached by men signifying their willingness to go on to farms, and co-operation between councils in inter-changing surplus men would help. Mr J. H. Grigg; That scheme has been badly worked. It’i a real ramp.
