COST OF WOOLPACKS

HIGHER PRICES PROBABLE

An indication that the price of woolpacks would probably be considerably higher for this season than last was given by the president of the Canterbury Sheepowners’ Union (Mr E. Hay) in his address at the annual meeting this week. He said that this was duo to shipping difficulties and extra costs of handling in India, as packs had to be railed from Calcutta to Bombay for convoy shipment, with heavy demurrage charges added. “It looks as though our flax packs may be lower in price than the imported jute packs for the first time since the Foxton mills were started/’ said Mr Hay Mr Hay said that the question of the supply of woolpacks in Australia was causing serious concern, and experiments were now being carried out with a view to meeting the situation should it prove impossible to supply woolpacks from outside sources. The wool was being pressed in a somewhat similar manner to that used in baling hay, and the prospects in this, connexion were hopeful.
