THURSDAY (Before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M.) FALSE STATEMENTS

A charge of obtaining £224 9s 2d from the Social Security Fund by making false statements was made against James Rogers, Senior-Detective H, Nuttall said that Rogers obtained first an Invalidity benefit and then an age benefit from the fund. He later obtained employment as an Army cook, but failed to notify the authorities that he had received a new income. He thereby obtained £224 9s 2d before it was found out that he was drawing money from two sources. Mr C. S. Thomas said that before Roger- entered camp he had had difficulties in the bakery business he conducted and he gave way to the temptation to catch up on his losses by continuing to draw from the fund after he had a job. He had paid back more than £2OO. Rogers was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within two years, and to make full restitution. UNLAWFULLY ON PREMISES A sentence of three months’ imprisonment with hard labour was,imposed on Thomas Henry-' Jones for being on enclosed premises without lawfdl excuse Previous offences were mentioned. A charge of opening premises for the sale of liquor after hours was withdrawn by leave of the Court. Arthur O'Leary, the barman, was fined £lO for supplying liquor after hours. FAILED TO ENROL Alan Field, a youth, was charged with failing to enrol in the general reserve. It was stated that it was a simple case of neglect, A fine of £2 was imposed. CHANGE OF ADDRESS For failing to notify change of address, Douglas Howard Frost was ordered to pay costs only. CENSORSHIP BREACH Jean Lavlnla McMillan was charged with publishing in writing Information about the disposition and armament ot military fj.xes. It was stated that there appeared to be nothing sinister in the letter which was written to a friend overseas. The Magistrate said he felt that the severer penalties being Imposed in other centres would have tp be Imposed in Christchurch, A fine of £6 was imposed. REMANDED Hugh Bernard Johansen, an Australian commercial artist, was remanded for a week on a charge of failing to report for military service, The police stated that defendant, had had his appeal against service on grounds of conscientious objection dismissed.
