TRANSPORT FOR HOME GUARD

Sir, —As a citizen of Christchurch, I read with disgust the remarks made by some members of the Metropolitan Licensing Authority suggesting that Home Guardsmen walk from the tram terminus to do their day’s work and walk back. One would think the war was a joke, New Zealand was playing at being prepared, and the Home Guard a necessary evil, to be humoured when convenient. The E.P.S. services are doing very good work, have cars and transport, receive petrol, etc., but in the event of invasion they are not trained to defend our shores. Because rubber is short why should Home Guardsmen, who can be considered a very patriotic body of New Zealanders. have their training upset and be made the chopping block? —Yours, etc., REALIST. August 13, 1942.
