TOWED TO PORT

TE AROHA’S TIMBER JETTISONED CREW LOSE MOST OF THEIR BELONGINGS (0.R.) WESTPORT, August 13. Members of the crew of the motorvessel Te Aroha (47 tons), which was picked up by the Gael early on Tuesday morning in a sinking condition and towed to port, lost most of their belongings. With a full cargo of timber aboard, the Te Aroha encountered tremendous seas, some of which flooded the en-gine-room, putting the engines out of commission. Later, it was found that she had sprung a leak. All hands were ordered to the pumps, but the water was gaining steadily. After being in this precarious position for some time, it was decided to jettison part of the deck cargo, and 20,000 feet of sawn timber was dumped overboard in the hope of easing the strain on the ship. Eventually, all hope of saving the vessel was abandoned. When, the Gael had towed the Te Aroha almost to safety the towing rope broke. The Te Aroha drifted out to sea and good seamanship was necessary to get a line aboard.
