* The Minister of Transport (the Hon. R. Semple) and the Minister of Labour (the Hon. P. C. Webb) will return to Christchurch by rail-car from the West Coast to-day. Mr G. H. McLean (District Traffic Manager) and Mr P. H. Morey (District Engineer) will return this morning from a visit to the West Coast. The appointment of Mr Sze Zau Tsung as extra Consul of China at Wellington was gazetted last night—(P.A.)

Mr William Hayward, a former member of the Legislative Council, has been appointed president of the Nationalist Club (Canterbury), in succession to Dr. John Guthrie, who died recently. Mr W. A. Gundy, who has been postmaster at Waimate for a number of has retired on the completion of 40 years’ service. Mr Gundy joined the department at Akaroa, and has been stationed at Christchurch, Kaiapoi, Gisborne, Dunedin, and Culverden.

Regret at the death of Mr J. H. Stringer, who was treasurer of the Prison Gate Mission from 1907 to 1942. was expressed at the annual meeting of the mission yesterday. A motion of sympathy with Mr Stringer’s relatives was carried.

Captain W Martin, formerly in charge of the Awatea, has decided to retire from the sea for private reasons. This has been announced by the head office of the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, Ltd. Captain Martin, who has a fine record of service, was selected to go to the United Kingdom in 1931 to command the Rangatira on her maiden voyage to New Zealand. On his return he resumed command in the passenger service and held charge of the Monowai, Aorangi. and Niagara. On the retirement of Captain A. H. Davey, Captain Martin was appointed to command the Awatea in July, 1940. retaining the charge of that vessel till March of this year.
