BOOK OF THE DAY
SECOND YEAR The Campaigns of Wavell. By Donald Cowie. Chapman and Hall. 253 pp. (16/- net.) Mr Cowie continues his "inner story of the Empire in action," the first part of which, "War for Britain," ran from September, 1939, to September, 1940. Victory over the Italians in Cyrenaica, Abyssinia, and Somaliland, the failure of the expedition to Greece, the connected disaster with which the new contest against Rommel opened, the importance of Tobruk in its tidal sway, and the defence and loss of Crete: these are the main themes, and explain the title, which, however, does not signify that other fields and aspects of the Empire's effort are excluded or that Mr Cowie's purpose is 'to analyse Wavell's strategy and tactics elaborately. He follows the main Cream of events with energy and exbits Its character in plentiful epifpde and other detail, often taken direct from eyewitness record.
