SUPPLIES OF FERTILISER DISCUSSED

The annual conference of the Fruitgrowers’ Federation approved the principle of the purchase of pip fruit by the Government through the Internal Marketing Department as a war measure. The basis to be asked for next season’s fruit crop purchase is the 1937 cost of production figure plus the assessed costs since that date. Concern was expressed at the restriction of fertilisers for orchards to li cwt an acre. It was stated that fruit was in a very disadvantageous position compared with other crops such as hops and tobacco. Market gardeners could get all the fertilisers they needed for vegetable growing.
