CANTERBURY CLUB IN AUCKLAND
♦ TALK ON SAMUEL BUTLER “Samuel Butler was one of the greatest figures in New Zealand literature, and his. ‘Erewhon’ the S raates book, with New Zealand as a background, ever written,” said Mr J. . Shaw. M.A., in his address to the Canterbury Club at Auckland recently. Although many of Butler* ideas had since been his prediction that if man continued to improve “the machine” it would ultimately become his master, was being partially fulfilled to-day in the aeroplane, the death-dealing bomb, and poison gas, said Mr Shaw. Mr J. P. Kalaugher, who presided, spoke of Butler’s explorations of the Southern Alps with the late Mr J. H. Baker. A suh-committee, comprising the president. Mr Harry Frost, the secretary, Mr Minchin Rudd, and Mr P. M. Curnow. was elected to make arrangements to welcome Mrs A. N. Grigg, M.P., when she visits Auckland shortly. ____________
