BOWLING CLUB

At the annual meeting of the Lyttelton Bowling Cluj? on Tuesday night the report and balance-sheet showed that the club was in a satisfactory position. Officers were elected as follows:—President, Mr S. Wales; vice-presidents, Messrs J Bisman and H, Bladder; secretary, Mr H. Wales; treasurer, Mr R. Duckwoith, committee. Messrs J. Voyce, A. T. E. Miller C. Toy, F. Barbour, D. Page, R. Phillips. D. Wilson,' and R. Sinclair; green superintendent. Mr D. Page; green committee, Messrs S. Sinclair and H. Fletcher; selector and delegate to centre, Mr T. A. Mahar; auditor, Mr J. Wilson. Magistrate’s Court At the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr G. G. Chisholm, S.M., Charles W. P. Shearman, licensee of the Mitre Hotel (Mr F. D. Sargent), pleaded not guilty to a charge of having aided and assisted Edward Robert Allpress and others in the offence of being on licensed premises during closed hours. William Briggs, for whom Mr Sergeant also appeared, pleaded not guilty to being on licensed premises during closed hours, and Allpress pleaded guilty to a similar charge. The charges against Briggs and Shearman were dismissed. Allpress was convicted and fined £l. In the following civil cases judgment was given for the plaintiff by default:— Banks Peninsula Electric Power Board v. D. A. Wright. £5 17s lOd; same v. F. J. Williams, £4 Is Id; T. A. Mahar and Company, Ltd., v. T. Harris, £lO 7s 7d. Children’s Court At a sitting of the Children's Court, two boys, aged 16 years, pleaded guilty to stealing ambulance supplies, valued at £7 5s Id, the property of the Railways Department. The police stated that the boys had broken into a first-aid cabinet in a railway van and had taken the contents. The goods had been recovered. The boys were placed under the supervision of the Child Welfare Officer for 12 months. A boy aged 15 years who had stolen a diamond ring valued at £ls. and £2 in money at Governor’s Bay, was placed under the care of Child Welfare Officer, for 12 months. Battles In Middle Cast With the object of supplementing the official accounts of big battles and minor engagements, a competition which was open to all ranks of the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force closed on June 30 for the best eye-wit-ness accounts of Middle East actions in which New Zealanders were engaged. The articles submitted will be filed in the official archives for use when -the official history of the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force is being written. The judges—Lieutenant-Colonel F. Waite (New Zealand Patriotic Fund), the editor of the ‘‘2nd N.Z.E.F. Times." and an officer appointed by headquarters, 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force—are now dealing with the large number of entries received. Three £5 prizes for officers and three similar prizes for other ranks were offered by the National Patiotic Fund Board.— (P.A.)
