REPRESENTATIVE MATCH CANTERBURY BEATS OTAGO A high standard of hockey was provided when Canterbury mat Otago at Hagley Park on Saturday. The visitorsplayed with splendid combination and their stick work and positional play were superior to that of the local team, but lack of finish in the circle robbed the Otago forwards of several goals. On the other hand the Canterbury forwards played with a dash and vigour that gained the victory. The teams were:— Otago.—K. M. Miller, B. Bedford. W. Boocock, a, Gunn, K. Lawry, A. W. Aitken,- D. M. Rowntree, A. Jack, J. L. Gregory, D. G. Johnson, and D. G. Barton. Canterbury:.—H. Barnhill, C. Douglas, N. Soper, T. Brown, C. V. Walter, E. Densem, F. B. Smith, M. Besley, E. Allen, M. Glentworth. and C. Stafford.' Canterbury held the game in the vicinity of the Otago circle for 10 minutes, and a succession of penalty corners was cleared by the Otago backs, Miller and Bedford being very sound. The Otago forwards got going and, led by Gregory, swept downfield to the Canterbury circle, where Barnhill successfully kicked out. C. Stafford and M. Glentworth were the pick of the Canterbury forwards, and staged some clever passing bouts. Glentworth opened Canterbury’s score by a brilliant solo effort when he picked up smartly from a free hit and went through to bluff Miller and score easily. Canterbury 1, Otago 0. T. Walter got the Canterbury forwards moving with Glentworth and Allen in the van, and the ball travelled from Glentworth to Stafford and back to Allen, who had no difficulty in adding to the score. Canterbury 3. Otago 0. Lawry, at centre half for Otago, was feeding his forwards well, and the game hovered in the Canterbury end for a spell, until Soper sent a long pass to Smith, who was a great game on Canterbury’s right wing. A neatly placed centre gave Allen a chance, which Miller kicked cut. Otago came with a great rush and Barton centred to Gregory, who passed on to, Rowntree, who beat Barnhill all thei waj. Canterbury 3*Otago 1.
