MAGISTRATE’S COURT

♦ MONDAY (Before Mr E. C. Lewey, S.M.) SUMMARY CHARGES Phillip Henry Gibbons, aged 18, a labourer, on six summary charges of theft and one charge of failing to comply with the terms of his release on probationary licence, was convicted and discharged. Senior-Detective H. Nuttall said the accused earlier in the morning, in the Supreme Court, had been sentenced to Borstal detention for three' years on other charges. NAME SUPPRESSED A man, suppression of whose name was ordered by the Magistrate, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within three months on a charge that with intent to defraud he attempted to obtain £25 by false pretences. The accused, who pleaded guilty, was represented by Dr. A. L. Haslam. REMANDED Charles James Devine, a painter, aged 38, -was remanded to July 27 on a charge that at Wellington on June 8 he failed to comply with the terms of his release on probationary licence. The clerk of the Court said other charges would be brought against the accused. COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE Tawhiorangi Smiler, aged 23, a labourer and storeman, pleaded guilty to 13 charges of breaking and entering and committing theft, 'eight charges of breaking and entering with intent to commit theft, and three summary charges of theft. On the indictable charges he was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence, and on the summary charges of theft he was remanded sine die for sentence. Smiler admitted breaking and entering, and theft from, the homes occupied by the following (the dates of entry shown in parenthesis):—John Benjes, 9 Flockton street (June 18); Olive Mary Genet, 227 Western terrace (June 15); Catherine Maud Morrison, 30 Warrington street (June 22); Frederick Smith, 32 Rochester street (May 15); Donald Henry Markham, 18 Spence street (June 15); Thomas Porterfield, 238 Hills road (June 22); Harry Edward Oscar Constable, 56 Oxley street (June 22); Lilian Maud Macauley, 120 Springs road (June 16); Richard Henry Trevella, 28 Avonside drive (May 30); Alfred Geoffrey Kemp, 106 Glandovey road (June 19); Douglas Eric Flanagan, 148 Pages road (June 12); Lena Amelia Beauvais, 51 Glandovey road (June 19); Kathleen Davidson, 30 Coronation street (May 20). Homes occupied by the following were entered by Smiler with intent to commit theft:—Cecil Craig, Springs road (June 16); Lavenia Hamilton, 60 Oxley street (June 12); Arthur Alfred Vincent, 32 Bracken street (June 24); Minnie Berwardine Roberts, 6 Malvern street (June 18); Ruth Florence Mac Gibbon, 55 Glandovey road (June 19); Albert Hamlin, 396 Innes road (June 16); John Alexander Thompson, 60 Isis street (June 19); Joseph Hill McClinchy, 21 Cuba street (June 12). The summary charges of theft were: (1) Of stealing on or about May 30 a woman’s wristlet watch and bracelet, valued at £2, the property of some person or persons unknown; (2) of stealing on May 30 a tennis racket, a cover, and two balls, valued at £3, the property of some person or persons unknown; and (3) of stealing on June 12 a cycle, valued at £lO, the property of Douglas Eric Flanagan. TRAFFIC CASE James Patrick Musson was convicted and ordered to pay costs on charges of riding an unregistered motor-cycle and driving without a licence, MAINTENANCE CASES (Before Mr F. F. Reid, S.M.) ARREARS OF MAINTENANCE Basil Albun Phillip Dean, for arrears of maintenance (£75 7s 6d) for a child, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within two years, conditional on his paying 2s 6d a week, in addition to the current order. Laurence Albert Sieves, for arrears of maintenance (£6B) for his wife and two children, was convicted and sentenced to Imprisonment for three months, issue of warrant to be suspended as long as 5s a week is paid, in addition to the current order. Albert Victor Bergstrom, for arrears of maintenance (£33), for his wife, was convicted and sentenced to imprisonment for two months, issue of warrant to be suspended as long as 7s 6d a week is paid, in addition to the current order, NEW ORDER An order for maintenance for his child at the rate-of 15s a week was granted his wife against Gordon McDonald ——
