POTATO POSITION

POSSIBILITY OF PANIC BUYING (0.R.) TIMARU, July 13. “What has happened with silk stockings could happen with potatoes. The Government has suggested that there would be a shortage, and panic buying might create that shortage,” said Mr W. J. Fletcher, of Willowbridge, who is South Canterbury representative on the Potato Advisory Committee, when commenting on the census being taken to ascertain the stocks of potatoes at present held in the country. It was an excellent idea to obtain from growers returns of stocks held, and he stressed the necessity for accuracy in completing these returns. Until the figures were computed it would not be known whether there were enough potatoes available for the needs of the country, and any suggestion at present about a shortage was premature and dangerous. Panic buying would mean purchase by consumers in excess of their immediate needs, and as potatoes would not keep for any length of time without wastage, that wastage would promote a shortage.
